The History of Maheshwar
Maheshwar is an ancient and culturally rich town located on the banks of the sacred Narmada River. The town is famous for its historic forts, beautiful ghats, temples, and handwoven Maheshwari sarees. Ancient Period
In ancient times, Maheshwar was known as Mahishmati, an important city mentioned in several Hindu scriptures like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. According to legends, the city was once ruled by the powerful king Kartavirya Arjuna, who was known for his strength and bravery.
Holkar Dynasty
Maheshwar gained great importance in the 18th century when the legendary queen Ahilyabai Holkar made it the capital of the Holkar Dynasty. She ruled with wisdom and compassion and contributed greatly to the development of the town.
During her reign, many temples, ghats, and architectural structures were built, including the famous Ahilya Fort, which still stands as a symbol of the city’s glorious past.
