The History of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
The sacred Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites for devotees. The temple is located in the holy town of Omkareshwar on an island in the Narmada River.
Mythological Origins
According to Hindu mythology, the origin of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is linked to a legend involving Lord Shiva and the powerful Vindhya mountain.
It is believed that the Vindhya mountain once started growing higher and higher, creating problems for the gods and sages. To seek blessings and power, Vindhya performed intense penance to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him. At that sacred place, the divine Jyotirlinga manifested, which later became known as Omkareshwar.
